Kant’s Philosophy of Language of Philosophy: On Philosophical Terminology

Abstract Among the passages which are suggestive of a philosophy language in Kant’s writings his remarks and arguments on appropriate terminology for philosophical concepts. I ask what it is Kant that makes some words more suitable than others. reconstruct from Inquiry concerning distinctness principles natural theology morality (1764) Critique Pure Reason (1781/1787) defend there no such thing as proper, real definition concepts (only nominal exposition); addition, only represented by terms abstracto , not concreto. On these grounds, sustains reference term to concept ultimately sanctioned term’s ‘linguistic usage’ ( Redegebrauch ). argue this basis criterion employing traditional terminology, ordinary language, or even extinct languages, refer concepts, rejection coining new – distinctly thoughts.
